I’ve visited Kyoto’s Fushimi sake district many times, from cherry blossom season to autumn leaves. As well as its sake heritage and status as one of ‘Japan’s Three Great Sake Brewing Regions’ (日本三大酒処, Nihon San-dai Sakadokoro), it’s also a hidden gem away from Kyoto’s maddening crowds.

Why I recommend Fushimi
For a complete Kyoto sake experience, I strongly advise taking a tour in Fushimi. You get three things in one: sake tasting, a brewery tour and one of Japan’s most famous sake districts.
Fushimi is the best and most convenient place to take this kind of sake tour in Japan for most people, particularly if it’s your first proper introduction to sake culture and Kyoto is already on your itinerary.
It also pairs easily with a visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha, less than 15 minutes away by train.

Our guide, Kiyomi, really knew her stuff, from Fushimi’s sake history through to what foods pair best with different sake. I thought I knew a fair amount about sake until I took this tour. How wrong I was.
If you enjoy getting into the details, this experience is perfect whether you’re just starting your sake journey or already have more advanced knowledge. Two of the most useful things you’ll learn are what kinds of sake you prefer and how to read a sake bottle label.

My experience
I enjoyed this tour immensely. We kicked off with how sake is embedded in Japanese mythology and Shinto religion, then took a scenic walk along a canal that once transported sake from Fushimi. Together, they provided excellent context for the rest of the tour.
Our guide, Yuki, was great fun and her commentary was comprehensive, but we still had plenty of time to absorb it and ask questions. Tasting 18 sake from 18 Fushimi breweries was a nice touch, and I appreciated how relaxed the session felt.
I’d choose this if you want a well-rounded introduction to sake culture, with a gentle walk around Fushimi’s serene sake district.

I experienced essentially the same guided tasting as part of the longer experience above, using the same company and tasting format. This version has seven sake instead of ten and no brewery tour.
I found the full experience quite intensive, so this may be the better option if you want the tasting without as much information to absorb.

I’ve not done this sake tasting; however, I enjoyed the ‘insider’ tour from the same operator. That’s excellent, so I’ve every reason to think this will be too.

Explore more of Fushimi sake district
If you’d sooner spend more time exploring the area, Fushimi is beautiful. Away from Kyoto’s more popular and busier sights, it feels like a chilled small town, an oasis by comparison. I see artists at work here more often than not, which says everything about how picturesque it is.
For visitors on Japan’s ‘golden route’, Fushimi is the best and most rounded place to experience sake culture, not least because it’s one of Japan’s ‘three great sake districts’.
I come back time and time again for its tranquil atmosphere, easy-on-the-eye historic wooden buildings, scenic waterways, great food, and, of course, sake! And while we’re on that mouth-watering topic, you can experience Kyoto’s renowned haute cuisine here.
Kaiseki at a 250-year-old Fushimi restaurant
If you love fine dining, you’ll love kaiseki, Japan’s most exquisite multi-course meal. I first enjoyed kaiseki at my wedding, just two days after arriving in Japan. I recommend trying it at least once.
At 250-year-old Uosaburo, this Wabunka experience combines Kyoto kaiseki with a closer look at the traditions behind it. You spend time with the tenth-generation proprietor, learn about the restaurant and its cooking, then enjoy a seasonal meal in one of Fushimi’s most historic restaurants.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to enjoy kaiseki at a ryōtei (traditional fine-dining restaurant) and go behind the scenes.

- Choken-ji Temple – a small canal-side temple dedicated to Benzaiten, goddess of water and music, with sake barrels around the grounds.
- Fushimi sake and canal boat tour – combines a canal boat ride, sake museum visit and time exploring Fushimi’s sake district.
- Fushimi Sake Village [Menu] – taste sake from Fushimi breweries, including seasonal and their flagship 18-sake set, with food from several restaurants under one roof. I visited as part of one of the tours above. [Map]
- Fushimi Yume Hyakushu – I did a sake tasting at this café in the former head office of Gekkeikan, a long-established Fushimi sake brewer. The beautiful wooden building dates from 1919. It specialises in Fushimi sake, with around 100 varieties from 17 breweries, plus coffee, sweets and souvenirs. [Map]
- Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum – learn about Fushimi’s brewing history and sake production. Visit as part of a guided tour above, or explore the museum on your own.
- Jukkoku-bune canal boat rides – I’ve taken this relaxing 50-minute cruise along Fushimi’s scenic waterways on traditional-style boats. The canals once carried sake, rice and other goods between Fushimi and Osaka.
- Kizakura Kappa Country [Menu – Japanese]– I’ve had a few of the tasty craft beers here, which use ‘Fushimizu’ (Fushimi water). They also serve sake and food in a restaurant inside a former sake brewery, or you can sit outside – which is quite rare in Japan! [Map]
- Teradaya Inn – visit an authentic and historic Japanese inn, a scene of intrigue and an assassination attempt on famous samurai Sakamoto Ryoma. There are no English translations; however, I enjoyed the traditional building and legendary Fushimi story.
